For the Adelaide Hills:

In term 2, starting in week 2, on Monday nights we will be hosting the Adelaide Hills section of the South Australian Interschool Chess Championship. Teams of 4 (and we recommend one reserve player) from your school battle it out against other schools in 3 grades. You can submit as many teams as you like in any of the grades. Last year there were 19 teams and just short of 80 students playing every week, making it the largest section for South Australia! The top scoring teams are given the opportunity to play in the State Finals in September! Last year Cornerstone College, St Francis de Sales College, Nairne Primary school and Hills Montessori school represented the Adelaide Hills at the state finals and showed Adelaide the hills is now a section to keep an eye on!

The exact dates are as follows: Monday 4th May, 11th May, 18th May, 25th May, 1st June, 15th June, 22nd June. Starting at 7pm at the St Michael’s Lutheran Church Hall on 6 Balhannah road, Hahndorf. Games last anywhere from 30  minutes to 1hr (30 minutes per player maximum). It would be appreciated if players can be present at 6:50pm (especially the first night!)bigpic2

The grades are as follows:

C2- this is a friendly group for students that have just started learning, mainly from reception and year 1 and 2. This is a great opportunity to be part of the ‘big kids competition’ and learn and see what chess is all about. This is also a great place for younger siblings to participate while waiting for their older brother/sister. As this is a friendly competition, no teams from this grade will be selected for the state finals

C1 – this is a group for students that know how to play and are ready to take it to the next level by playing against other schools. Players need to be familiar with all the rules and know how to play.

B – this is a group for students that have been consistently winning in the C grade or have progressed significantly in their chess skills. We recommend Year 7 students to play in this grade.

If you are unsure which students to select for which grade, please do not hesitate to consult with David.

We would be happy to host a secondary school competition at the same time so if you have teams available, please contact us asap so we can ensure there will be enough players.

Final costs for the tournaments will be: $60 per team ($15 per student) plus a $50 school registration fee. As discussed earlier, you are most welcome to submit as many teams as you would like. The school registration fee is a fixed amount and won’t change regardless of the amount of teams. If this is your first year participating as a school, the $40 registration fee will not be charged. (we would like to encourage new schools to participate). The invoice will be send directly to your school by the South Australian Junior Chess League in term 3.  We like to stress that Chesslife only hosts this event and does NOT make any money for running the championship.

The Interschool Chess Competition – updated 14/09/2014

Congratulations to all schools! It was a very exciting final. Please find the final list below. We would like to thank Deputy Mayor Jill Whittaker for her continued support of the Campbelltown Library Community Chess teams! Once again they played some amazing chess. However, as this is a school competition and the Campbelltown Library teams are not a school, the School Shield for the C Grade will this year go to Walkerville. Once again, congratulations to everyone!
